It was the very early ‘90s when the Explorer rose to popularity as a versatile model for active singles and busy families. It still stands a shining example of what an SUV should be: versatile, spacious, and capable, with features that make it ideal for road-tripping. Today’s eighth-generation version maintains those qualities, but with specific nuances spanning a lineup of six trim levels. From the economical but simply equipped Active 100A to the trail-ready Tremor and the performance- focused ST, every Explorer shopper will find the right one for their mix of wants and needs. And with a towing capacity up to 5,000 pounds (a factory towing package comes standard), the Explorer is ready for weekend adventures.
In changes for the 2027 model year, the Platinum is eligible again for the upgraded engine, a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6. An optional bundle called the Sinister Package is offered for the ST to give it 21-inch wheels with a gloss-black finish, plus amber daytime running lights, and dark-accented ST badging.
